New exhibits!

Our first two exhibits, all finished!

>The Dow Jones Industrial Infantry: visualizes the size of the thirty companies on the Dow Jones Industrial Index through platoons of little green army men. We also added the market capitalization (market value) of each company --- even with over 2,000,000 employees, Wal-Mart isn't worth as much as Microsoft.

>CEO Salary or Average Salary: visualizes the change in the ratio between CEO salaries and average salaries from 1965 to 2005, through champagne glasses and styrofoam cups. As you can see, things have changed significantly.

American Inventions / Trophies

Just picked these up today, they'll be used in our exhibit of American Inventions. Each trophy will be topped with an influential object developed in the USA, painted gold of course.
Incredibly excited for this one. See you in 35 days!

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

Bizarro Pat Robertson says: "This, Mr. Obama, is punishment for opening the eastern seaboard for oil exploration."

Foam core!

Ramping up for our proposal to exhibit in the Valade Gally at the brand new Taubman Center. We decided it would be helpful to build a good ol' foam core mock-up of the space so we can prove-out the experience; work out a sort of flow for the exhibit. Haven't this much fun all semester!

Common Sense: Outline

OVERVIEW

Ingredients: equal parts art gallery exhibit, infographics, and sculpture. Blend with the American Dream. Serves 300,000,000.

In our exhibit, we plan to explore the history of our nation and the common goals and dreams we share. We also aim to examine the state of the union, the inequalities in our society and difficult choices we have to make. Finally, we will look into the future, preparing for the worst while expecting the best. The exhibit will be built with a mix of efficient and honest materials and found objects.

With the right blend of wonder and wisdom, we hope to encourage visitors to think beyond today’s polarized and cynical discussions and to consider civic values. We have no political agenda; we aim only to inspire discussion. A Pepsi Refresh grant would let us bring this vision to life. Please explore our concept sketches and website and help us transform information into knowledge.

GOALS

Encourage critical thought about American society

Share knowledge playfully

Inspire visitors to imagine a better nation

CHALLENGES

Blending optimism and realism: not so negative so as to discourage, not so positive so as to sugarcoat

Being fair: we want to ignite dialogue, not destruction

Avoiding the use of charts and graphs. Ewwww!

Project Previews

Above are concept boards for a handful of the exhibits that we've been imagining. We tried to submit them to the Pepsi Refresh competition last night, but unfortunately, we were thwarted by a few internet hiccups. The search for funding continues!
